How do I ask for time off work?

I received last Friday my offer for medical school interview which will be in a week's time (yes, applicants only have a week to organise flights, etc!!). But I just started work last week so I am currently undergoing orientation. They haven't really given me my own workload as I am still learning the protocols. What's the best way to ask for time off?
